God Come to Life

We have always had a tremendous leap of faith and imagination in the never-ending attempt to understand God. There is a fantastic amount of historical literature and folklore created by us in that attempt.  But today, we may have a new vision and opportunity to image the divine source through the eyes of awareness, experience, science, intuition and the human heart. What we see through this perspective is an image of God that bears little resemblance to our past notions and beliefs.  I think it is all too human that our previous ideas of God have tended to be reflective of the human form and character.  This is because it is very difficult for us within the limits of the capability of the human mind to understand clearly an idea surpasses both infinity and eternity.

Although there has been long-standing conflict between the religious and the scientific understanding of the fundamental nature of reality, I believe that science is helping us to understand a new and far more noble and beautiful image of God than we have had to this point in time. One of the systems of thought that seems to be basic to this new idea of God is the old idea of pantheism.  In this way of thinking God is present in everything in creation, everything in reality.  Reality itself is made of the substance of God and all of reality is an expression of that God, of that substance.  I believe that this is a very compelling idea and what we seem to observe in nature through science seems to lend possible support to this new notion.  It may truly be, as difficult and as anxiety producing as it may be, that the divine does not truly exist in a macroscopic sense as a kindly, compassionate, and loving spiritual entity or being.  Rather, it may be that the heart of reality is truly an amazing and miraculous form of energy or of consciousness, some fundamental power beyond human comprehension.  Now, it seems to me that whatever this is, is truly a wondrous reality. How I could come to that conclusion is based upon the beauty that I perceive and feel in the natural world and in our observation of the universe.  The form of reality conveys a beautiful, amazing, wondrous essence.  This perception is more than a function of intelligence, it is a realization both cognitive and emotional, it is a deep powerful feeling response.

The atheist may say that there is no proof or evidence of God in nature or reality at all.  I believe that that is an unfortunate, hasty, and premature conclusion. It may well be that there is no proof or evidence of the kind of God that many have understood and believed in before now. And that, is certainly debatable by many today.  But I maintain that God as an idea and reality may still be possible in ways we have not thought of it before and in ways that we have not understood before. Because there is a cause to reality itself, no matter how far off in an infinite past it may have been. There is something that either has always been or that began and that everything else came from.Who or whatever that was, was the original and perhaps continuing God.

The God that I think is real was very likely in existence before the creation of the universe we live in.  I think that the Big Bang inflation event was an event of divine creation.  Quite likely facilitated by whatever strange natural processes existed at that time for the state that the big bang singularity was then.  But then the singularity rapidly and comprehensively inflated, and as a group it began to condense into the forces and matter that we know today.  Over the eons, as we now know, the universe grew and evolved to the form and structure that we do observe at the present time.  Now I believe that what I think to be God was present at the Big Bang inflation moment and that the singularity itself was composed of God.  Is the universe grew and expanded substance of God within it grew and expanded.  Today, God is everywhere in the universe.  And the structures that have arisen within God have all been created out of God and throughthe freely created and evolved forces that principles that create structure in nature.  Evolution itself is a divine process.  It is the way that God creates natural form and life.  It is much more miraculous, amazing, wondrous, beautiful, and noble that any prior account of the divine being creating reality out of a simple whim.

Now comes the part that creates the greatest wonder for me.  I believe that the substance of God is what we would call Love. But no love as we have previously understood it in all the different definitions and connotations it has.  I use the word Love because it conveys a qualitative notion of the true nature of the Divine Being. This Love which has been unleashed within the creation of reality is the most amazing and wondrous reality that there is.  God is made of his or her own love.  And all creations and all manifestations of God are the love of God.  So in effect we are the love of God.  And this is the most astonishing revelation about ourselves and the true nature of reality.  We are the love of God.  And the love of God comes to greater life through our expression of it.  In this way we give greater reality to God.  In This Way, God truly comes to life.  This life is a transcendent life is over and above the simple growth and evolution of existence.  This life involves an awareness that recognizes deep, meaningful, intrinsic value.

In our human existence we can come to know the love of God.  Most easily we see it moment by moment, fully and awesomely expressed by the natural world.  The beauty that we perceive in nature is a reflection of its source and the proof that God is the creator and is present.  But coming to know a higher level of love involves both awareness and effort.  This effort for us human beings is the reach to overcome the limitations and frailties of our natural and primitive nature.  We must strive to overcome our own self-centeredness and self absorption to reach a level of awareness from which we see this divine love in ourselves, in others, and in the heart of all things in life.  It is from this perspective that we may act to honor the value in ourselves, in others, and in life and in this way we practically express transcendent, spiritual love.  In this way we bring Agape to life.  In this way we bring greater life to God itself.

No one of us is the totality of God.  The totality of God is beyond our comprehension and understanding.  But each one of us is divine and it is made of divine nature.  As we awaken to this truth we gain growth and responsibility.  For if God is to gain true reality in human life, it must be expressed through us human beings. This is our great opportunity and potential. This among and perhaps above all other things is a reason to live and live with meaning and purpose and vitality.  Think of this today, what can I do to bring life to God?  What can I do to help others believe that there is something more than what is commonly seen and experienced?  What can I do to raise up myself and others  What can I do to make this world a better place?  Learn and live this love.  It is the best there is.
