The Source of Happiness

It is such a tragic circumstance that many of us search desperately outside of ourselves for happiness. But, it is really true that it comes from within. And it happens that it is not so much in getting what we want consistently, but rather in developing and maintaining an open, positive, spiritual attitude about ourselves and life. Now, you might say, "That all sounds well and good, but you do not know what I have been through or what I am having to suffer with now, then you'd think differently about this." I know that there are trials and situations that create great pain and suffering and that a great many experience this. But there have also been many who have found how to still be happy in the midst of horrendous circumstances. I think of people like Dr. Viktor Frankl, who survived the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp. He related that the camp guards took just about everything from a person that they could take, but they could not take their attitude, they could not take a person's ability to find meaning in their own suffering.

Through Eyes of Love, we can see the beauty in our own hearts. This is the essential reality of our human being. We all have the divine light in our hearts, no matter how deeply it may seem to be buried. This is the greatest truth of who and what we are. All we have to do is to devote ourselves as fully as we can to bringing that beauty, that true Love out into the world, each in our own unique, individual way. I really like the response the Dalai Lama gave some time ago in answer to a question about what religion he had. He said:"My religion is simple, my religion is kindness."

When you allow your heart to be your vision, (that which sees things as they truly are, ) as well as we can see or know something, then you create a vision which is framed by compassion, empathy, tolerance, humanity. When we see deeply, beneath our judgments, analysis, expectations, experience, we see something of the true preciousness and miraculous nature of life and of beings - all of us here so amazingly constructed and expressed, so subject to our own frailty and the processes and pressures of life, so fleeting...in that our time here is so very short. When one has such a view they have a new vision, and this sight creates a natural gratitude and appreciation, a sense of continuing wonder and awe about life, a sense of fondness and tenderness toward all of us essentially innocent, limited, beings.

When you see life through eyes of Love, happiness is what you feel, most of the time. It rises up from your depths and pours out upon yourself and those you encounter. It is a vision you must choose, because you are free to choose others. But any others have their price. You have to decide what you want to experience, and what you are willing to let go of to allow it to be there. It can be done...
