The Real Meaning of Christmas

The Christmas Story is truly a mythological gift. This does not mean that the story is a fantasy, rather, it is a transmission of spiritual wisdom through the symbology of language and creative writing. Much like the biblical creation story, which does not seem to be literally true , but is instead a mythology that contained an account of the great historical transformation of early human consciousness from primary instinct to free thought along with a symbolic account of the process of creation. The Tree of Life is a symbol of consciousness, whose fruit enabled humanity to have a moral consciousness for the first time in human history. In this interpretation, the idea of original sin seems misconstrued, the story really seeks to account for the gift bestowed by the divine through nature of advanced cognitive capability along with the freedom to intrepret and the freedom of choice. We do know now that our freedom of choice is both a blessing and a curse, a blessing to enhance both our survival and quality of life, and a curse because we can make choices that result in adverse effects.

The Christmas Story is a myth that accounts for a tremendous milestone in the evolution of human consciousness. That is, that for the first time perhaps, the true nature of God was revealed to be Love. Jesus of Nazareth may have been the prophet who brought this magnificent insight to the world. He also sought to reveal that the divine lives in every being, that everyone is a son or daughter of the Creator, and that the holy spirit or fundamental consciousness exists in every conscious being. This revelation further reveals that the kingdom of heaven, or spiritual reality, is present within - in the heart of every being and that the great potential is for a person to choose to bring this divine reality out of themselves and into the world. Sin then is able to be seen as the choice to deny love, to deny the emergence of true love from one's own heart. The wages of this sin is suffering, a kind of death of one's own spirit.

The real meaning of Christmas is better news for all of us than our literal interpretation of the old story. The good news is this: we are all true children of God through birth, we and everything else that naturally exists is chosen by the creator to be here, our true salvation is our capacity to love and more significantly, our choice to express true love. We can give greater reality to God in this life, by choosing to see life through eyes of love, and by bringing our own unique expression of Love to life through loving actions. Now that is really something to celebrate and share!
